Charlotte earned her B.F.A. degree from The Cleveland Institute of Art, began her Masters Degree at Georgia State University, and continued her education of exploring new art mediums through numerous local and national workshops, studying with some of the country’s most notable artists. These included John T. Scott of New Orleans, and under the tutelage of Moe Brooker of Pennsylvania, she confidently leaped into one of her most successful genres, abstract art. She has taught several art workshops locally as well as those at Tougaloo College in Jacksonville, MS, and The Inner City Cultural Arts Center, in Shreveport LA. Because of her passionate desire to share knowledge, Charlotte also continues her volunteer work, teaching residents at a local nursing home facility, and serves as a mentor to several budding artists of different ages and career paths. As well, she has served as a judge on several occasions, including the Atlanta Dogwood Festival and Arts Station Cultural Arts Center, in Stone Mountain. Among her many awards are the Hampton Arts Commission Award of Excellence, inclusion in Art Basel, Florida, and the NAACP Image Award. Globally, her work has extended beyond the states including venues in Newcastle, England; Surinam, South America, a solo exhibition in Anguilla, British West Indies as well as in numerous fine arts spaces nationally, including MOCA, Georgia, The Hammond House Museum, The Freedom Rides Museum in Montgomery, Tubman Museums in Macon and the Wilma Jennings gallery in New York among many. Charlotte’s art has been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout her career. Her Public Arts acquisitions include The Fulton County Public Service Facility and Emory University School of Nursing, Atlanta. Their collaborative, “sculpted paintings” medium, with her sculptor husband, Lucious, in an international competition sponsored by the city of Hampton, Virginia, garnered them “The Hampton Arts Commission Award of Excellence” and People’s Choice Purchase Award, for “Sounds of Perpetual Spring”, which was permanently installed in their downtown concert district. As well, the couple was commissioned to create an installation for The Inner City Cultural Arts Center, Shreveport, LA. Among Charlotte’s many awards, and accomplishments, she achieved an induction into the National Association of Women Artists, (NAWA); a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and The John T. Bigger’s Award in two triennial competitions from the Hampton Museum in Virginia. Immersed in all of the arts, she enjoys writing poetry and screenplays, playing guitar and cooking. And with her strong faith, she has used all of them to power through some of the hardest times of her life. She unselfishly shares her experiences and talents to inspire others. As an illustrator of, or contributor to, eight children’s books, and in her painting series “Stories of My America” and “Blood Rhythms”, she’s told the stories of many others throughout her creative journey. Her documentation of the plight and vulnerability of her people has also been highlighted in the thematic exhibitions of her representative gallery, Zucot Art Gallery in downtown Atlanta. Charlotte’s story is impactful and personal, and she considers the ability to share it, “truly an honor and a blessing”.
